Sportscar World Cup
Sportscar World Cup, IMSA Champion Jon Bennett and CORE Autosport have announced the closure of their racing operations. Bennett’s sports car squad, created in 2010, has won 15 titles, including the LMP3 title in 2022. A championship team is leaving the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. CORE autosport announced its closure on Thursday, according to team owner Jon Bennett. Since its inception in 2010, CORE has been one of the most successful teams in sports car racing.
In 2022 for the Sportscar World Cup, Bennet and co-driver Colin Braun won both the driver and team titles in the LMP3 category. Bennett has fielded teams in IMSA Prototype Lites, IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and Global Rallycross throughout the years.
CORE has competed in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship since the 2014 season, when the American Le Mans and Grand Am Series merged to become the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar World Cup Championship.
CORE has won 15 championships in the driver, team, and endurance cup categories.
On Thursday, Bennett issued the following statement:
“From dragging a racing car to SCCA events in 1992 to winning races with Colin Braun in IMSA’s premier prototype class in 2018, I have had a fantastic, dreamy experience in the sport I love so much,” Bennett said. “Sportscar World Cup was a tough choice, but as life outside of racing continues to divert my attention away from the cockpit, I know that it’s time to call it quits on this crazy journey.”
“Thank you to Colin Braun, who spent ten years of his career to providing CORE autosport with perfect, world-class performance.” Colin’s speed and passion helped our team achieve amazing success and several IMSA titles. Most importantly, I made a beautiful, life-long friend.
“Thank you for your persistent pursuit of precision and greatness, Morgan Brady, Jeff Braun, Brian Colangelo, and the whole CORE autosport team.” Our success on the track stems from the pit wall and the many hours of preparation.
“I’d like to thank Porsche Motorsport for the privilege of representing their brand for seven seasons. CORE and Porsche worked together under Morgan Brady’s guidance to add many memorable triumphs and titles to Porsche’s long heritage of success.
“I was a fan of IMSA since the early 1980s fire-throwing GTP days, and it has been a pleasure to compete in IMSA for the last 13 seasons.” Thank you very much for your help, IMSA.
“It’s time to unclip the HANS device and become a spectator once again at the Sportscar World Cup.” I’m looking forward to the reintroduction of GTP factory prototype racing and an exciting season for IMSA. I’ll be there, just beyond the chain link fence, watching with childlike wonder.
“Thank you to everyone who supported us along the road.”
